No mystery here, this comedy will get you laughing

By MIKE CHAIKEN EDITIONS EDITOR Expect guffaws, gasps, and giggles because “A Game’s Afoot” at the Thomaston Opera House this weekend and next. Southington’s Meghan Rickard plays Aggie, one of the colorful characters on stage in this comedy from playwright Ken Ludwig (best known for his farce, “Lend Me a Tenor”). “I’ve never been in a show funnier than this,” said the 24-year-old actress. “It’s so fast-paced… You can’t get bored.” And given the winter that Connecticut has experienced, Meghan said, “A Game’s Afoot” is a “great escape” for two hours from the New England doldrums. “People want to be entertained,” said Rickard in a phone interview. The plot centers around the character of William Gillette, a real historical figure who lived in Connecticut in the  late 19th century and early 20th century. He was renowned for his performances as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. Press materials from the Thomaston Opera House explain the show is a “1930s-style whodunnit, with plenty of double-cross, gunplay, lies, deceit, and disguise… (Gillette) invites colorful characters to his eccentric Connecticut castle for the weekend.
