Bristol Firefighters Local 773 and the American Legion #2, are sponsoring the Bristol Half Marathon & Relay Race on Sunday, Aug. 18. All proceeds will benefit Fisher House Connecticut, a home away from home for military families. Attorney Kevin Creed, of Bristol has spearheaded the CT effort to raise half of the $6 million needed. The national Fisher House Foundation will match the funds raised in Connecticut. Groundbreaking for the first Connecticut-based Fisher House, located next to the VA Hospital in West Haven, is slated to begin in spring 2014. Creed initiated these fundraising efforts for Fisher House after returning from his third stint as an army helicopter pilot, including a tour in Afghanistan and two tours during Operation Desert Storm. He observed, first hand, the need for the services that Fisher House provides. Fisher House can be best explained as the military version of a Ronald McDonald House, explained a press release from the organization. Fisher House provides a place for military families to stay, free of charge, while a loved one undergoes treatment at a VA medical center.
